The former star Coug is leaving the Chiefs for the Rams. Watson was one of the top corners in the free agent market this offseason. The Rams signed Watson to a three-year deal worth $51 million with $34 million guaranteed. This is a big boost from his rookie deal that was for four years $3.75 million.
The Rams are in a clear win-now mode, after reaching the Conference championship game. The Seahawks were able to exploit the Rams’ secondary for over 330 yards in the air. Within 72 hours the Rams have traded for Chiefs corner Trent McDuffie and awarded him a new deal that pays nearly $30 million a season.
McDuffie and Watson are former teammates and will have chemistry right off the bat. Watson is still relatively young for an NFL corner at just 27 years old. Watson is coming off a career year with two interceptions, six pass breakups, two sacks and 64 total tackles.
The Rams had a top ranking defense but that was mainly due to their front seven. Their backend was a problem giving up big numbers on multiple occasions in the biggest moments. With QB Matthew Stafford having under three years left most likely, they are in win-now mode.
