On Wednesday, Cougar baseball announced an addition to the coaching staff. In 2027, former University of Texas assistant coach Kimble Schuessler will be joining the Cougs in Pullman. He will be responsible for coaching outfielders, coaching first base and working with the Coug hitters.
Schuessler joins the Cougs after a single season coaching with the Longhorns. Prior to that, Schuessler was playing with Texas in Austin. Immediately after graduating in 2025, the Llano, Texas native stayed put to help lead the Longhorns to the College World Series in 2026.
In his three years as a Longhorn, Schuessler posted a career 0.326 average, .934 OPS, 29 doubles, 19 home runs, and 79 RBIs. On top of that, he ended his playing career with only five errors, giving him a eye-popping .994 fielding percentage.
This past season as a coach, he helped the Longhorns to a dominant 46-15 record. They went undefeated in the Austin Regional, and then proceeded to beat the University of Oregon in both games of the Austin Super Regional. However, their time in the College World Series was cut short by Georgia who beat them twice in the tournament to knock them out.
After an impressive playing career, and post season experience immediately on his resume, Schuessler brings something that the Cougs will be needing.
“Kimble comes from one the most successful programs in the country, and there is no doubt his knowledge and toughness will benefit our players immensely,” WSU head coach Nathan Choate said in a WSU Athletics statement.
That praise is not limited to his new home, but echoed by the places he leaves behind.
“Kimble is one of the brightest, most talented young coaches that I have been around in my 36 years of college baseball,” Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle said in a statement to WSU Athletics. “He is committed to helping young people at the highest level, brings elite toughness and energy while also keeping a temperament that breeds success in the most pressure moments.”
“Kimble is an elite hire. He brings a passion and work ethic to a team that is unmatched,” Texas assistant coach Troy Tulowitzki said.
High praise, an impressive track record and SEC experience make Schuessler an exciting hire for the Cougs in the offseason. The jury is still out on how he will perform in Pullman. But, with a brand new conference, championship momentum and a young group of Cougs with tons of potential, Schuessler has a fun canvas to paint with on the Palouse.
