Halloween came alive at Washington State University! At Butch’s Spooky Spin, students arrived in costume to party and celebrate the spooky season with a variety of seasonal activities, hosted by the Student Entertainment Board (SEB) at the Compton Union Building (CUB) on Oct. 17th.
The event, which featured a multitude of things for students to do, including a roller rink in the middle of the CUB, had been in the works for some months, according to Jenissa Hepton, the brainchild of the event.
“We have some of our annual events,” Hepton said. “The roller skating rink…that’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a few years, and this year I was like, we’re gonna make it happen.”
Hepton said safety issues forced them to postpone the roller rink from a previously planned September event, but it worked well for Halloween.
The event, like all of SEB’s events, which include monthly ‘Up All Night’s,’ monthly Open Mic Evenings, guest speakers, and the annual Renaissance Fair, is funded by the University.
“We are funded by students and by the school,” Hepton said. “We are given an annual budget, split between all of our different programmers.”
Besides the roller rink, other activities at the event included the Haunted Maze, the ‘Monster Match,’ and a Karaoke room. There was also a costume contest, which was won by a couple dressed as a lamp and a moth. Sophomore Gaige Anderson, however, had a different favorite costume.
“I saw Darth Vader, around here,” Anderson said. “Full Darth Vader costume, like, looks very expensive. My favorite so far.”
Anderson said he enjoyed the night and felt like there was plenty to do.
“Well, there’s tons of stuff to do, and so that’s super fun. And we made tote bags,” Anderson said.
Hepton also thought the event turned out to be a success.
“I think that overall it went really well. Everyone that I’ve spoken to had a good time at the event,” Hepton said. “That’s really what it’s all about, is just student enjoyment.”
SEB’s next event will be a rest and relaxation-themed Up All Night during finals week in December.
