ASWSU met with Pullman City Council Tuesday, and among the many things discussed, asked the city to “come to campus and engage with us where we’re at.”
City Council has been weighing ideas to improve foot traffic downtown among students for some time now. Students make up a significant block of Pullman’s population.
ASWSU’s Legislative Affairs Director Bhargav Iyer suggested the city try to meet students where they are, on campus.
“That’s true, students do come down from the hill often and engage with businesses and other facilities downtown,” he said. “I personally would love to encourage the Council [to] come up the hill to campus and engage with us where we’re at.”
ASWSU has been making student engagement with the larger city a priority, hosting events aimed at bringing students off campus and down the hill. Most recently, this includes Cougar Trunk or Treat, which brought ASWSU, sororities and fraternities together to pass out candy for Halloween.
ASWSU Vice President Grace Carpenter talked about future events, notably an event much like Spokane’s Pig Out in The Park. ASWSU will host Pig Out in Pullman. The event will work with local food vendors in Pullman to showcase what they have to offer.
“There’s some things that students don’t even realize is 5 minutes away from them instead of 15 minutes away,” Carpenter said.
ASWSU meets with City Council every semester. The next meeting is slated for February up the hill in the CUB.
