WSU women’s basketball brings home a win against Seattle University after being on the road for the last two games before coming back to finish their last two conference games, winning 69-55 last night in Beasley Coliseum.
Immediately after tipoff the Cougs set the pace and tone for how this game was going to go. Alex Covill with the tipoff to Tanja Valancic immediately bringing the heat with ball movement getting it to the paint to Covill to score the first basket for the Cougs. Valancic has a total of 5 points, two rebounds and two assists. The Cougs ended the first quarter with a 12 point lead 21-9.
Covill dominated the boards for the Cougs both on offense and defense, not shying away from the basket and getting some stops on defense. Covill had a total of 18 points and seven rebounds. Covill also passed 500 career points and is currently sitting at a total of 502 points.
“Well really I have to give props to my teammates because I think that they found me really well tonight” Covill said.
Going into the second quarter both the Cougs and Redhawks went back and forth for the first couple of minutes, both teams yet to score. Lauren Glazier wins a jump ball for the Cougs and continues to bring the energy on offense and defense with a total of 4 points, six rebounds and one assist. Going into halftime with a 14-point lead and ending it 53-39.
Coming out of the half the Cougs brought back the heat and continued to dominate the boards and out score the Redhawks. Eleonora Villa was not afraid to take to the paint starting the third with a layup picking up momentum on scoring in the second half of the game. Villa had a total of 15 points and seven rebounds.
“I think that it was thanks to [my teammates] that put me in a better position and we involved everyone in our offense,” Villa said. “We push the ball and that’s helped a lot.”
In the fourth the Cougs did not give up that energy on defense holding the Redhawks to only 18 points in the fourth. On defense the Cougs dominated with rebounds having a total of 46 rebounds and 16 of those being on offense.
“I think we did a really great job sharing the ball tonight and giving it to everyone. Everyone contributed so got to thank them for that” Covill said.
Notable plays for defense and offense are from Mackenzie Chatfield with seven assists and great ball movement getting the ball to Malvina Haziri and Jean Chiu both swishing threes. Chatfield also had seven rebounds and a total of 6 points. Charlotte Abraham made moves on both sides of the court with two assists, six rebounds and 9 points.
“You just see like this is a team that hasn’t won a lot of games and they walked on the court really wanting to win,” head coach Kamie Ethridge said.
The Cougs will play their final season game against Saint Mary’s College of California this Saturday at 12 p.m. at Beasley Coliseum. Before they head to Las Vegas for the WCC tournament.
