While the NBA playoffs are still going on, let us reflect on who the best Cougs were this past season.
This season was a roller coaster, like most Coug fans are accustomed to. Here are the awards for the WSU products:
Most Valuable Player: Though it should not be a surprise, Cedric Coward was the Most Valuable Player among Cougs in the NBA this season. He was a killer to start the season before his injuries, averaging 13.6 points per game, six rebounds and three assists. Coward became the face of the Memphis Grizzlies with Ja Morant being out. Coward drew praise from LeBron, Stephen Curry and other NBA vets. While Klay Thompson is the most accomplished Coug ever, Coward has the potential to be the first star to lead his own team.
Most Improved Player: Mouhamed Gueye had flashes of starter-level play, making him the most improved Coug this season. But after the Atlanta Hawks traded for Jonathan Kuminga, his role diminished. Gueye finished with 4.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and one assist. Gueye is not a free agent until 2027, but with a plethora of forward depth on the roster, do not be surprised if he is traded this offseason.
Fumble of the Year: Klay Thompson is the fumbler of the year, not just off the court with Megan Thee Stallion, but on the court as well. Since 2022, Thompson’s play has declined, but this season it was evident. Game plans would say “do not let Klay get hot,” now they say “we will live with him shooting.”
Thompson shot the lowest percentage from three (38.3%) in his career. His time in Dallas is most likely over. A potential reunion in Golden State has been rumored.
Honorable Mentions: Isaac Jones and Jaylen Wells will be going home empty-handed. Wells had a down season, never leaving his mark at any point this season. The duo of him and Coward will be exciting to watch next season if he can get back to his 2024 self. As for Jones, he is on the Detroit Pistons riding the bench, but when he plays he is decent. All he needs is an opportunity, but with a loaded Pistons roster his opportunities are limited.
Overall, this season was fun to watch, but there is so much room for improvement. With no Cougs being expected to be drafted in the NBA Draft, the five Cougs in the NBA will hopefully be retooled this offseason.
