Washington State legend Klay Thompson has returned to Pullman – and Cougar fans are wondering if his visit is more than just a quick trip down memory lane.
The Washington State men’s basketball team’s Instagram account posted photos last Monday welcoming Thompson back to campus. The images showed the four-time NBA champion scrimmaging with players in the gym, posing for photos, and reconnecting with the program.
Earlier in the day, active players also shared images of Thompson golfing at Palouse Ridge Golf Club, making it clear he’s spending extended time with the team. The “Welcome back” message from the team confirms what Cougar fans were already buzzing about from players’ Instagram stories. Thompson, now a member of the Dallas Mavericks, is putting himself right in the middle of Washington State Basketball once again.
Thompson’s return comes during a wave of NBA stars formally rejoining their Alma mater’s in big roles. Earlier this year, Steph Curry became an assistant GM at Davidson College and Trae Young accepted the same role at the University of Oklahoma, paired with a $1 million donation. Damian Lillard and Terance Mann also took on front office roles at Weber State and Florida State, respectively.
From 2008 to 2011, Thompson established himself as one of the greatest scorers in WSU history. He left Pullman ranked third all-time in points, set the single-season scoring record, and led the Cougars to the NIT semifinals. His No. 1 jersey was retired in 2020, making him the second player in program history to earn the honor alongside Steve Puidokas. Since then, his NBA career has catapulted him into stardom. With four NBA championships and five All-Star selections and recognition as one of the greatest shooters to ever play the game, Thompson’s name is etched in basketball history. His return to Pullman shows that his Cougar ties remain strong.
Having Thompson back on campus, even unofficially, is a huge boost for the basketball program and the school in general. His presence in the gym sends a message to current players and recruits alike that Washington State produces elite talent that stays connected.
If Thompson ever decides to take on an official role, the potential impact would be transformative. His championship experience, leadership, and NBA connections would elevate Washington State’s profile in recruiting and player development.
Currently, Thompson’s visit seems to be a chance to reconnect with his Alma mater, spend time with players, and enjoy a summer day on the Palouse. In the context of NBA stars increasingly stepping into front office roles at their schools, it’s natural for Cougar fans to be dreaming big.
Whether it’s simply an offseason stop or the beginning of something more, one thing is for sure. Pullman is still home for Klay Thompson. And if WSU ever decides to bring a “Splash Brother” in its front office, it already has the perfect candidate.
