Washington State will look to build on its first win of the season when it hosts rival Washington on Friday night at Beasley Coliseum.
The Cougars (1–2) are coming off an 81–71 victory over St. Thomas, their most complete performance of the season. In his second year leading the program, head coach David Riley said the Cougars are starting to find their footing after two early losses.
“We’re learning more about who we are every game,” Riley said. “That win gave us confidence and the guys are buying in.”
Washington (2–1) enters the matchup after a 78–69 loss at No. 16 Baylor in Waco. The Huskies trailed most of the night as the Bears’ physicality and perimeter shooting proved too much to overcome.
The Huskies are led by projected lottery pick Hannes Steinbach, who averages 14.7 points per game and 12.7 rebounds per game. UW also has good guard play with freshman JJ Mandaquit, who averages 5.7 assists per game and three other guards who average double figures in scoring.
Second-year Huskies coach Danny Sprinkle will get his first experience in Pullman for the Apple Cup rivalry.
“These games are about pride and toughness and are always intense,” Sprinkle said. “It’s about execution, composure and who can make the right plays down the stretch.”
Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman on ESPN+.
