Chad Baker-Mazara led USC to an 88-75 win against Arizona State for the Maui Invitational title.
The Trojans’ leading scorer Rodney Rice missed the game with a shoulder injury, but that didn’t stop USC.
Senior Jaden Brownell saw more playing time and did the most with it. In 15 minutes, he scored 16 points.
Baker-Mazara led the team in scoring with 23 points. This is his second straight Maui Invitational title, winning with Auburn last year.
In the third-place game, Washington State fell behind early and could not catch up to a gritty Seton Hall team.
The Cougars shot an abysmal 5-24 from three and Seton Hall outscored WSU in the paint 50-28.
If Washington State wants to find success this year, they need to find their identity. Similar to the Chaminade game, the Cougars played into the Pirate’s style of play. They did not adjust until it was too late to finish 1-2 in Maui.
In the loser’s bracket consolation, Texas beat No. 23 NC State, 102-97 and Boise State beat Chaminade, 102-76.
