Washington State women’s basketball fell short 85-72 to the San Francisco Dons Saturday night at Beasley Coliseum.
The Cougars started off strong on defense after hitting the tipoff to the Dons. The Cougs started off strong on defense and held the Dons. On the offensive side, the Cougs struck first with Alex Covill draining two free throws. Covill ended the night with 17 points, one rebound and one assist.

Eleonora Villa came in with a strong layup in the first half of the first quarter. Villa totaled 18 points and four assists. With that performance,Villa’s 1,303 career points ranks her No. 13 in WSU history in career scoring. Villa is one 3-pointer away from cracking the top 10
In the second quarter, WSU kept up on offense with an amazing team dynamic. Covill and Villa continued to shine as Malia Ruud had two baskets, racking up 4 points and two rebounds.
“So it was a quick turnaround. But we had to really, I guess, lock in,” Covill said.
Malvina Haziri also showed up in the second quarter, putting six points on the board. Lauren Glazier contributed on both sides of the ball, getting two points and three rebounds. Tanja Valancic also put up three points and four rebounds.
The Cougs started the third quarter at a slow pace but immediately brought the energy and set the tone for the last half of the game. Charlotte Abraham put up two three-pointers and a total of eight points and three rebounds. Keandra Koorits scored five points with four rebounds.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougs continued their battle against the Dons. Wazzu pushed on both offense and defense. Haziri started the fourth off with a 3-pointer. Alsina added on with five points, four assists and two rebounds. Ultimately in the end fell short to the Dons by 13 points ending the match 85-72.
Head coach Kamie Ethridge was asked at the press conference about what she saw from the team tonight. She noted that when the team played Saint Mary’s, they beat them by 21 rebounds but against the Dons the Cougs lost by 21 rebounds.
“So I think rebounding was as big a part of this loss and in this game as anything,” Ethridge said.
The Cougs will hit the road for their next two games before returning home to Pullman on Jan. 31 against Gonzaga. They will take on Pacific and Santa Clara.
