Fraternity and sorority students at WSU raised $10,109 for local organizations, tabled on campus and volunteered downtown last week as a part Greek Week activities starting March 30 and ending on April 3. The fundraising total was released Wednesday by the WSU Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life.
A new event is featured each day of the week and started with Monday’s spring cleaning downtown on Main Street.
About 200 volunteers showed up to participate in the cleaning. Volunteers power-washed Pine Street Plaza and part of Triangle Alley, set up movable tables and chairs in both plazas, cleaned windows of several downtown businesses and swept entrances and public spaces within four hours.
This event took place from 12 – 4 p.m. and members of Greek life were able to offer free services to any local business.
Greek Week, led by the WSU Interfraternity Council and WSU Panhellenic, is an annual spring semester where each chapter from each council is paired to promote unity and give back to the community.
Every year they pick an organization to donate all the money raised. This year it was announced on Instagram that all proceeds would go to the Downtown Pullman Association.
The DPA is a non-profit dedicated to revitalizing and sustaining historic downtown areas of Pullman.
Tuesday featured a volleyball tournament where teams competed against each other in a bracket-style competition.
Student Mackenzie Mattson, who participated in the tournament, enjoyed the community it created.
“I thought the volleyball tournament was a really great way to not only bring certain houses together by competing and practicing on the same team but also the whole Greek row together to watch and cheer on their friends,” she said.
Wednesday’s event was table wars, which took place 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the Glenn Terrell Mall.
Each team decorated their table and tried to sell the most tickets to win.
“It was a great opportunity to learn about other chapters as well as the multicultural Greek life that we see throughout our community and get to actually see the activities they do on a daily basis,” student Reese Roberts said.
Following the table wars event, members of Greek life also participated in an Airway Hills fundraiser open-to-close event. Members supported the DPA by paying to play golf simulators or mini golf.
Thursday was a continuation of the Airway Hills fundraiser.
On Friday, there was a Pups and Cups fundraiser from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. where anyone could come buy a drink, play with dogs and support the DPA.
Greek Week not only gave chapters the opportunity to collaborate, build connections and raise money for a meaningful cause, but also provided a way to give back to the greater Pullman community.
“We’re beyond grateful to WSU Panhellenic Council, WSU Interfraternity Council, and WSU Multicultural Greek Council for supporting the Downtown Pullman Association as part of Greek Week,” the DPA said after Greek Week in an Instagram post.
