Springfest switches it up with some comedy

From staff reports

Students have a chance to laugh at themselves tonight when comedian Jimmy Tatro finds the hilarity in the stereotypical college life in his “Memoirs of a College Dropout” tour.

WSU is one of the few stops on the limited tour. Tatro is well-known for his YouTube channel “Life According to Jimmy” as well as his roles in “22 Jump Street” and “Grown Ups 2.”

Molly Hughes, Student Entertainment Board (SEB) speaker programmer, said Tatro isn’t the typical act SEB brings to WSU. Usually SEB has inspirational or motivational speakers, but this time the programmers chose Tatro to break away from the norm, she said. His whole persona in his work is based on typical college students, and he has a lot of fans at WSU, she said.

Michael Ehde, SEB special events programmer, said he is also a fan of Tatro’s work and is looking forward to what he does next.

Bringing a comedian to campus for Springfest is a new endeavor for SEB, and the programmers felt it was a needed change in the regular Springfest celebration, he said.

The purpose of Springfest is to give students a time to relieve stress before all of the final exams and projects, Ehde said. The annual outdoor fair was starting to feel repetitive, and bringing a comedian to campus was a good change to make, he said.

All of Tatro’s material is great, and should probably come with a “viewer discretion is advised” warning, Hughes said. But, overall she said she’s lucky WSU is one of the few stops he left on his tour, she said.

“It was a great opportunity to get him, and we just decided to try something new,” Ehde said.

Doors open at Beasley Coliseum tonight at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for students and $15 for the general public and are available from the Cougar Card Center, Beasely Ticket Office and Ticketwest.com.
