The WSU men’s golf team used its tournament this weekend as a final tune-up for the Pac-12 Championships.

WSU rode a strong third round to finish seventh in the 12-team field at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational. At 11-over, 875, the Cougars rallied yesterday to eclipse Marquette by five strokes. Iowa State won the tournament with a 17-under, 847.

While the Cougars did not compete against any other Pac-12 schools during the weekend, they were able to witness the dazzling performance of Wichita State’s Louis Cohen Boyer. The senior won the tournament title by seven strokes with a 16-under, 200.

Iowa State needed a strong final round to win the tournament. Like the victors, the Cougars also shot their best round of golf on Sunday. Redshirt-senior Alex Wagner led the team with a 2-under, 70, on the final day. Wagner finished tied for 38th at 8-over, 224.

Senior Michael Anderson paced WSU over the course of the weekend, carding a 1-under, 215. Anderson now has two Top-25 placements this season.

“Michael got off to a slow start today, but was able to put together a solid tournament,” WSU Head Coach Garrett Clegg said about Anderson’s third round 2-over, 74, in a press release.

Redshirt senior Sang Lee also finished in the Top-25, carding a 3-over, 219, to finish tied for 23rd. His play earned him his third Top-25 finish of the year.

Freshman Derek Bayley and Junior Bhurinat Songpaiboon both shot their best scores in the second round on Saturday afternoon. Bayley carded a 1-under, 71, and Songpaiboon shot a 2-over, 74.

Competing as an individual, senior Charlie Mroz also carded his best score in Round 2, shooting a 1-over, 73. Mroz finished the tournament tied for 44th at 9-over, 225.

While Anderson led the Cougars in the tournament, Klegg said that he is pleased with where the rest of his team is at heading into the Pac-12 Tournament next week.

“Alex had a great final round for us, and Sang played strong as well,” Klegg remarked. “Now it’s time to get back to Pullman and get prepared to host a great championship event.”

The 2015 Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championships will be held at WSU’s Palouse Ridge Golf Club. The first and second rounds will be played on Monday, April 27.
