Defensive lineman Xavier Cooper participates in position drills at Washington State University’s Pro Day, March 12, 2015.

Cougar football provided one last opportunity for their NFL hopefuls to prove they belong in the professional ranks.

The Cougars held their pro day this morning as players participated in a multitude of drills including the bench press, 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump and shuttle runs. Scouts from the Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, New YorkJets, Washington Redskins, Oakland Raiders, Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers all came out to watch the Cougar hopefuls.

Among the Cougars participating in pro day were wide receivers Isiah Myers and Rickey Galvin, defensive linemen Xavier Cooper and Kalafitoni Polé, linebacker Cyrus Coen, running backs Marcus Mason and Theron West, defensive backs Tracy Clark and Damante Horton. Horton returned for another showcase after playing his final game in the 2013 season.

Myers was the standout for both the broad jump and vertical jump, leading the participants in each category. Myers registered an impressive 10 feet 8 inches for the broad jump while exploding for a 38.5 inch vertical leap that saw him break the markers of the bar on his first attempt. Myers struggled with his technique a bit during the 40-yard dash. Despite the impressive leaping ability, Myers believes he left a lot out there.

“As a letter grade or something I would say a C,” Myers said. “I feel like I should’ve been at B+, A today but yesterday I felt really good, I kind of did the drills and stuff just warming up and staying in shape, but today I didn’t feel as well as I did yesterday.”

Despite a solid performance from Myers, the standout of the day appeared to be Coen who turned in an impressive all-around workout. Coen busted out 28 repetitions for the 225-pound bench press and demonstrated his athleticism with a 33.5 inch vertical leap, while appearing to finish with an impressive 40-yard dash time.

The official times for the 40-yard dashes, shuttle runs and three-cone drill were not formally announced and scouts afterward kept the times to themselves.

Coen did say his friends and teammates recorded a time of around 4.6 on the 40-yard dash.

Several WSU coaches were on hand to support the players in their pursuit of their dreams to play professionally. Coen said he wouldn’t have made it this far without their help.

“There’s no words, especially them just taking out the time just to train us,” Coen said. “I mean it’s awesome and I’ll be forever grateful for them.”

Mason appeared the fastest in the 40-yard dash, as there were rumblings he ran around a 4.4. He also posted the second best broad jump score of 9 feet 5 inches. West appeared to do well in the shuttle drills and registered a 33.5 inch vertical.

Quarterback Connor Halliday and wide receiver Vince Mayle did not participate in any of the drills. Mayle said he’s been training hard for his next opportunity to impress scouts.

“I’m in Seattle training for my next pro day April first,” Mayle said.

Cooper did not participate in any of the group drills; however, he did compete in some defensive line drills at the end of the day with Polé. Both linemen aggressively smacked pads and showed their athleticism leaping over people on the ground en route to swatting the ball held by a machine representing the quarterback. It appeared Cooper was speaking with a scout from the Dolphins after the work out.

After a vigorous training regimen over the course of the last few months, Myers said he planned to spend the rest of the day in full recovery mode.

“I’m gonna go home and go take a nap probably for the rest of the day,” Myers said.
