From staff reports

Women artists from the WSU campus and Pullman community will show their work and talk with students today during SEB’s Sketch Wednesday.

The SEB Gallery’s current exhibit, Reinterpreting Reality, will run through the end of this week. The exhibit, which has run annually for 20 years, has a rich history of female artists from WSU and the public.

“The question we consider for this exhibit is ‘How do we feature female artists in a creative and impactful way?’” said Angel Nava, art coordinator with Student Involvement and Leadership. The answer they came up with was Reinterpreting Reality.

Reinterpreting Reality is a unique exhibit because it doesn’t turn any artwork away, Nava said. The exhibit welcomes all different forms and levels of art, as long as a woman created it.

“I feel like in some galleries there’s a stigma about what is allowed or welcome,” Nava said. “This is an opportunity to bridge that wall.”

The exhibit features traditional work from past Reinterpreting Reality exhibits, plus an addition for work by Ayana Jackson.

“Ayana Jackson is a photographer, she does these really powerful self-portraits,” Nava said. “She did this series where she recreated famous photographs.”

Ayana Jackson takes a unique approach to her work, putting herself in the photos instead of a model.

“She challenges how women are viewed and portrayed in society,” Nava said.

Students can view the artwork and talk with WSU artists from 12 – 1 p.m. in the SEB Gallery. Artwork will be for sale, but the viewing is free and open to the public.
