VoJazz offers a swing on classic jazz

From staff reports

WSU’s vocal jazz ensemble, known as VoJazz, will perform a number of vocal and instrumental works showcasing the group’s wide variety of musical literature and ability in its final concert of the year at 8 p.m. tomorrow in Bryan Hall Theatre.

“VoJazz is a small, selective vocal jazz ensemble that performs both on and off campus with repertoire ranging from jazz standards to vocal improvisation,” junior creative writing major Sophia King said.

The VoJazz ensemble is open to all WSU students regardless of major who complete an audition. The current ensemble consists of 10 vocalists and a three-piece rhythm section featuring piano, bass and percussion.

“Our VoJazz concerts usually consist of a smaller set involving the entire combo and choir together with some pieces by the combo alone. This time we have included a few solo charts that hopefully the audience will enjoy,” sophomore math education major Genevieve Kayla said. “I personally love the song selection this semester. We have a nice mix of upbeat jazz music and slower pieces.”

As a full ensemble, the group will perform different arrangements of works such as Jennifer Barnes’ “Brazasia,” Gene Puerling’s “Georgia on My Mind,” Kerry Marsh’s “Nature Song,” and Larry Lapin’s a cappella “The More I See You.”

Various vocal quartets, duets and soloists will perform “Happiness is a Thing Called Joe,” “Route 66,” “Don’t Know Why,” “Autumn Leaves,” and “Ain’t No Sunshine.”

“These pieces embody a wide range of styles, from uptempo to a capella, and showcase a variety of the group’s skills,” King said. “I think the audience will enjoy this diversity of sound in our set, as well as the contrast between our work as a group and our work as soloists over the course of the concert.”

The instrumental combo will perform three pieces of jazz literature, “Celia,” “When I Fall in Love,” and “The Night Has a Thousand Eyes.”

The concert is free and open to the public.
