Cougar men take home individual awards, Hawkinson snubbed

From staff reports

Washington State University senior guard DaVonteĢ Lacy and sophomore forward Josh Hawkinson were honored Monday for their efforts during the basketball season.

Lacy was named first-team All-Pac-12 while Hawkinson picked up the All-Pac-12 Most Improved Award and an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention.

During the regular season Lacy finished fourth in the Pac-12 in scoring, averaging 17.2 points per game. He also became the schoolā€™s all-time leader in 3-point shots made, passing Klay Thompson late in the season.

Lacy was also the first Cougar to be named the first-team all-conference team since forward Brock Motum in 2012.

Lacy and Hawkinson met with the media Tuesday to discuss the accolades and the upcoming Pac-12 Tournament.

ā€œObviously I thought I deserved it last year, but I started to get that focus this year to try to work as hard as I can in the off-season,ā€ Lacy said. ā€œThen to see it pay off and earn an award, thatā€™s pretty cool to me.ā€

ā€œMy most-improved award, I was very grateful for that,ā€ Hawkinson said. ā€œI thought I deserved at least a second-team all-conference, but thatā€™s just some wood to fuel the fire for next season and the season after that.ā€

As a freshman last year Hawkinson averaged a mere 1.2 points and 1.6 rebounds per game as he was buried on the end of former-coach Ken Boneā€™s bench. He flourished this year under Head Coach Ernie Kent, improving his averages up to 14.7 points and 10.2 rebounds per contest. Hawkinson finished with 19 double-doubles in the regular season, setting a school-record for most double-doubles in a season in the process.

The Cougars open the Pac-12 conference Tournament Wednesday as the No. 9 seed competing against No. 8 seed California at 12:10 p.m. in Las Vegas. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
