From staff reports

This weekend saw a record-breaking performance from Washington State University’s track and field team during the Husky Classic in Seattle.

Senior Abby Regan set a new record time in the women’s mile. She ran the mile in four minutes and 43.91 seconds, breaking the record previously held by Lisa Egami.

“It felt hard and we went out quite fast but I stayed strong and am very happy this is the result,” Regan said. “It’s been my secret aim at WSU to get my name next to Bernard Lagat’s and hopefully I can take a few more seconds off it in two weeks’ time.”

Redshirt junior Candace McFarland saw a personal record in the women’s 60m hurdles, with a time of 8.46 seconds—good enough for fifth all time in WSU history. Senior Matt Wardell threw a shot put a PR distance of 54-feet 10 inches, and senior Jesse Jorgensen ran well in the men’s 800m race with a time of 1:50.24.

WSU Head Coach Wayne Phipps said the team had a successful weekend overall.

“Our focus now is to get a few people to improve upon their current NCAA rankings and to fine-tune things in preparation for the MPSF Championships in two weeks,” Phipps said.

This weekend also saw a number of Cougars head down to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they competed in the Don Kirby Elite Invitational.

Redshirt Freshman Abu Kamar PR’d in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.09 seconds, good enough for fifth place. Sophomore Danielle Darden also PR’d with a 60m dash time of 7.57.

Next weekend, the WSU track and field team will head to Notre Dame to compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational.
