Encore art show

From staff reports

For those who missed it the first time or just want a second look, 10 of fall’s Palouse Plein Air contest paintings are again on display.

The Palouse Plein Air traveling show is featured at the Whitman County Library in Colfax through the end of this month.

“We have a jurist who comes in and looks at all the pieces and gives them awards,” said DJ Scallorn, arts assistant for the city of Moscow.

The City of Moscow puts on the outdoor painting contest every fall, said Kristie Kirkpatrick, director of the Whitman County Rural Library.

The traveling show of last fall’s 10 prize winners is currently on display at the library, Kirkpatrick said.

The paintings are all done outside- some are landscapes, and others are of various buildings in the Palouse area, Scallorn said.

”We tend to have a lot of landscapes, so the buildings really stood out,” Kirkpatrick said.

The contests this last fall had 18 artists enter a total of 43 pieces, 10 of which were given awards by the juror, Dana Aldis, Scallorn said.

Some of the pieces in the traveling show include first place winner “Creekside Life” by Forrest Dickson, “September Colors” by winner of the Artist’s Choice Award Nancy Bowman, and “Bursche Road” by Nancy Bowman, winner of the Best Palouse award, Scallorn said.

“It’s neat because there is such a variety of paintings,” Kirkpatrick said. “It’s just beautiful, because we live on the Palouse, and the watercolors look wonderful.”

The Palouse Plein Air traveling show will be showcased at the Colfax branch of the Whitman County Library through Feb. 28. The library is open Monday-Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 – 5 p.m.

“It’s always a different exhibit each year,” Scallorn said. “It’s always interesting to see the Palouse in a new light.”
