West side school of music

From staff reports

WSU faculty members will band together to provide performance and profit for music students.

The next installment in the School of Music’s Faculty Artist Series, the Brass Quintet, will take place at 8 p.m. Friday in Bryan Hall Theatre.

The WSU Faculty Brass Quintet will feature assistant professor of music Matthew Aubin on horn, clinical assistant professor of music Chris Dickey on Tuba, undergraduate adviser Denise Snider on trombone, associate professor of music David Turnbull on trumpet, and Assistant Athletic Band Director Chris Wurst on trumpet.

“I think it’s very good for students to hear their teachers perform, see the professional standard of excellence,” Aubin said. “How often do you get the chance to see professionals each week, right in your backyard, essentially?”

The quintet will perform Eric Ewazen’s “Balkanika: Four Scenes from the Balkans,” written specifically for brass quintet, an uncommon feat, as well as arranged selections from the popular musical “West Side Story.”

“I think the audience will recognize things like ‘Maria,’ ‘America,’ ‘I Feel Pretty,’ but there will also be selections such as, ‘Something’s Coming,’” Aubin said.

General admission is $10, senior citizens and non-WSU students get in the door for $5, and tickets for WSU students with ID are free. All the proceeds from Faculty Artist Series events go directly to the School of Music scholarship fund.
