Cougar men clip Ducks in overtime

From staff reports

Electricity was in the air Thursday night as WSU downed Oregon in Pullman.

Regulation wasn’t enough for either Oregon or WSU as the Cougars prevailed in overtime 108-99 in a hard fought game. It marked the first time since Dec. 7, 2002 that the Cougars scored 100 or more points in a game. WSU lost to Gonzaga 110-104. It was a triumphant victory for Head Coach Ernie Kent as he beat his alma mater for the first time.

Both teams came out with fire as it was raining threes in the first half of the game. WSU shot 72 percent from the field and hit 7-of-9 three pointers en route to a 57-52 lead at half. Oregon was 6-of-11 from three and shot 55 percent from the field in their first half of action. With both teams playing as fast as they do, there were no fast break points for either team in the first half of action. The Cougars finished the final 2:25 of the half on an 8-4 run.

Sophomore guard Ike Iroegbu continued his high level of play as he led the Cougars with 16 points in the first half. Senior guard DaVonté Lacy and sophomore forward Josh Hawkinson also scored in double figures in the first half, adding 13 and 14 points, respectively.

The second half started out at a much slower scoring pace for the Cougars. However, Lacy led a charge at the 15-minute mark as the Cougars went on an 8-4 run. From there, both teams picked up where they left off in the first half, providing viewers with a high-energy, fast-paced game. Oregon and WSU battled all half, taking turns leading. WSU prevailed in overtime, making pivotal free throws to seal the deal.

Hawkinson led the Cougars with 26 points and recorded his tenth double-double of the season, adding 13 rebounds. Iroegbu scored 20 points while adding five assists. Lacy scored 24 points in a well-balanced game, securing five rebounds and dishing out four assists. Junior forward Brett Boese had career-high 16 points, hitting 4-of-6 from three-point land.

The Cougars finished the game shooting 59 percent from the field. WSU shot an outstanding 14-of-24 from three-point range. They lost the rebound battle 36-35, but had 10 more assists than Oregon with 24 versus the Ducks 14.

The Ducks were led by their senior guard Joseph Young, who at times single-handedly prevented the Cougars from going on a big run. He finished the game with 32 points and five rebounds. Forward Elgin Cook had a double-double with 10 rebounds while scoring 26 points.

Head Coach Ernie Kent kept to the strategy he used against Washington as he used a small lineup to counter the shot, blocking presence of freshman forward Jordan Bell. The strategy worked as Oregon was only able to manage two blocks for the game. Bell also struggled with fouls, as Hawkinson and the Cougars were able to neutralize his presence on the floor.

WSU will look to carry their momentum into Saturday’s match-up with Oregon State. The Beavers lost to the Huskies Thursday night and are 2-2 in Pac-12 play. The game can be seen at 6 p.m. Saturday night on the Pac-12 Networks.
