Halloween-themed run for animals in need

Monsters will soon take over Pullman: zombies, a man with a moose on his head, a ten foot ghoul, and dogs in wheelchairs. Is the city under attack?

No, it’s just Pullman Moose Lodge’s annual Halloween fundraiser.

This is the second year the lodge has put on the 5K fun run/walk. Proceeds will go to Heath’s Haven, a sanctuary for animals with special needs such as dogs with neurological problems that are unable to walk on all fours.

“The money will help to take care of these little guys that would normally be euthanized,” said Events Coordinator Erin Semler. “This money gives them the opportunity to be given a wheelchair.”

The Pullman Moose Lodge holds events and community fundraisers, helping organizations such as the Humane Society and Light a Candle, said Semler. The lodge’s headquarters are located in downtown Pullman and anyone can apply to become a member.

Semler describes the lodge as an international organization with a family.

“The lodge is where members gather and sometimes put on different events,” she said.

Participants of the Pullman Monster Dash are encouraged to wear their Halloween costume, and Semler assures there will be nothing scary. She said it will be fun, but there is a possibility of seeing some odd characters while out on the course.

Strollers and dogs are welcome, but dogs must be on a leash. Some of the animals from Heath’s Haven will also make appearances at the race.

The Pullman Monster Dash is Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. Registration is $15 on site on race day, and there is no age limit. For more information on the fundraiser, the Pullman Moose Lodge and Heath’s Haven, visit www.pullmanmonsterdash.com.
