The Washington State Cougars finished eighth overall in the Bridgestone Collegiate Golf tournament at the Grandover Resort’s East Course in Greensboro, N. C.

After overnight frost delayed and shortened the first day of golf, the Cougars carded a 293 or five over par. In the final round on Sunday, the men’s team shot 294, six over par. The Cougars finished with 587 strokes, 11 over par, according to golfstat.com.

Although Head Coach Garrett Clegg had higher expectations headed into Greensboro, he said he was happy about how the individual players performed during the tournament.

“Michael and Sang were very good this week,” Clegg said. “They would say they could have played better, but overall they were solid.”

Through the first round, redshirt junior Sang Lee was tied for fourth with a score of 71 strokes (-1) and junior Michael Anderson ended with a 73 (+1) to tie for 11th.

Anderson and Lee finished in the top 10 at the tournament, and both Anderson and Lee ended Sunday even par and tied for ninth place among the field.

“It was a solid week for me,” Anderson said. “I was really able to battle out there and make a lot of birdies to offset my bogeys.”

However, the rest of the team did not perform as well as Sang and Anderson. Senior Jarrett Foote ended with two strokes over par and tied for 36th. Sophomore Bhurinat Songpaiboon shot six over par to tie for 44th, and senior Blake Snyder shot eight over par and tied for 59th, according to golfstat.com.

Clegg said he was unhappy with how the rest of the team performed and hopes this can change once the team hits the offseason.

“We have to get better,” Clegg said. “We are heading into the offseason and need to work extremely hard if we want to become better. Hopefully we can turn the corner over the off season and come out next spring ready to compete.”

The Bridgestone Collegiate Golf was the last tournament of 2013 year for the men’s golf team. The team will continue action next year on Feb. 19-21 at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawaii.
