Guitar Week kicks off at University of Idaho

MOSCOW — As part of the Lionel Hampton School of Music’s Guitar Week, The Contenders will be performing classic  ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s instrumental music.

The Contenders, a band formed from University of Idaho faculty and one UI alumnus, are performing in the Lionel Hampton School of Music, said Karen Hunt, a media relations associate for the university.

Dunn will play a collection of classical arrangements, including a piece by composer Benjamin Britten.

“He’s a very dynamic and intense performer,” said James Reid, professor of music at UI for over 35 years. “He’s very substantial in terms of character of the music.”

The concert includes a variety of arrangements, showcasing classical composers from the 16th century to the 21st century including Johann Sebastian Bach, David Willcocks and Benjamin Britten, Reid said.

Reid, a professor of guitar and music history at UI, originally created The Contenders to supplement his History of Rock and Roll class eight years ago.

“I wanted the students to have something more than just listening to the recordings, so I had the band perform for class. The students really enjoy it,” he said.

Both Reid and his son will be playing guitar at the concert, joined by Jon Anderson on keyboard, Dan Bukvich on drums, Al Gemberling on bass, Vanessa Sielert on saxophone and Vern Sielert on saxophone.

Dunn’s performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24, while the Contenders’ concert is Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. Both will take place in the Haddock Performance Hall of the Lionel Hampton School of Music, which is located on the corner of West Sweet and Blake Avenue on the UI campus.

Tickets will be available at the door and cost $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.
