Finding the family; auditions open for Addams Family musical

From staff reports

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky; they’re all together ooky, the WSU School of Music.

The School of Music will hold auditions for its upcoming production of the “The Addams Family” musical today and Wednesday. Sign-up sheets can be found on the bulletin board in the Kimbrough lobby with specific time slots.

The Opera Workshop and director Julie Wieck, an associate professor of music, present a full production every spring semester timed for Mom’s Weekend, alternating each year between opera and musical theater. Past productions have included Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” in 2014, and Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein’s “Carousel” in 2013.

“I had not done a contemporary musical for a while. I also looked at audience appeal for Mom’s Weekend,” Wieck said. “I grew up watching ‘The Addams Family.’ If (people) don’t know the musical, they know of the TV show.”

“The Addams Family” musical takes place in a single day, as Wednesday Addams falls in love with college student Lucas Beineke, and the two families come together to meet one another, Wieck said.

“Andrew Lippa, the composer, is becoming a very important Broadway composer,” Wieck said.

The musical will include a cast of approximately 20 students, with 10 lead roles and “an extremely active and involved” ensemble of the Addams ancestors.

“There are usually about 40 to 50 students that audition for a cast of 20 to 30,” she said. “Auditions are open to majors and non-majors, freshmen to graduate students.”

Students interested in auditioning should prepare a two to three minute song, either a musical theater selection or not. An accompanist will be provided, or a student may bring their own. The audition will also include vocalization to check range and assess aural skills, and a performance of a short portion of the script, which will be available upon audition.

Rehearsals will be held from 3:10 – 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays during the scheduled class time for the required course, MUS 428. Outside rehearsals are only scheduled during production week for the performances on Mom’s Weekend which will take place April 10 and 11 in Bryan Hall Theatre.

“I’m excited to work on a show that’s very fun, but also has quality song and script,” Wieck said.

Students with more questions can contact Julie Wieck for more information.
