Letter to the editor: Partnership, not enforcement

Dear Editor;

Thank you for running the article “More than a requirement” today, Dec. 8, 2014. The Greek community at Washington State University is often portrayed negatively in the media, but through the Center for Civic Engagement’s partnership with both Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils, I know that they are the most civically engaged group of students on campus!

One correction I would like to point out is that the requirement for Greek community service is a requirement they place on themselves through their governing councils, and not through the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE). Although we do track Greek students’ civic engagement (and all student civic engagement, for that matter), the CCE does not require any students to complete community service.

As mentioned above, we do have a partnership with both of the Councils, and the chapters they represent, in which we work with council and chapter officers to develop meaningful service opportunities and relationships with community partners.
