Caldwell calls it quits

From staff reports

Cougar safety Teondray Caldwell is no longer a member of the football program, sources said.

Caldwell’s reason for the departure appears to be a bit cloudy, as three different sources cited different reasons to Cougfan.com, Friday.

One source said Caldwell quit the team but wasn’t aware of reason, a second source said that Head Coach Mike Leach dismissed Caldwell from the team. The third source told Cougfan that the strength coaches were looking for Caldwell after he didn’t show up for a scheduled workout, and the coaches weren’t informed until later that Caldwell was leaving the program.

The three sources said they wished to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to speak about the situation.

Athletic Communications Director Bill Stevens said athletics does not comment on team matters.

Caldwell rushed for 271 net yards with one touchdown on 50 carries as a running back last season. This year he was switched to safety where he started the season opener against Rutgers.

Caldwell registered four tackles in the game, however, he was moved behind redshirt freshman safety Darius Lemora on the depth chart before the Nevada game, and Lemora has held on to the starting job since.

Recently, Caldwell had slipped behind freshman safety Sulaiman Hameed on the depth chart. One source said Caldwell had been appearing unhappy and having a negative attitude for a fair amount of time.

The Cougars will move ahead without Caldwell in preparation for this week’s match-up against the No. 3 ranked Oregon Ducks.
