Things to do during Week of Welcome

From staff reports

Cougs Play Day

A 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a ropes obstacle course and a campus bike tour are some of many activities that will be available on Cougs Play Day, a new event hosted by University Recreation (UREC).

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug.17. Also on the schedule are several classes for yoga, kick-boxing and rowing. A belay clinic for rock-climbing enthusiasts will teach students how to climb using ropes.

“These events are a great way for students to get exposed to the activities that are offered at WSU,” said Jessica Norman, a UREC group fitness and instruction coordinator.

All of the activities will take place at the Student Recreation Center (SRC) on Valley Road and across the street at the Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC).

Color Me Coug 5K

A five-kilometer untimed color run will take place Aug. 24 beginning at the SRC.

The run, which involves passing through huge clouds of colored cornstarch, will begin at 9 a.m. in the parking lot. Participants will receive white Color Me Coug T-shirts.

Participants can register until Aug. 23 on the UREC website. Registration costs $20 for SRC members and $35 for non-members.

Backyard Bash

Volleyball, an obstacle course and intramural sports demonstrations are a few of activities that will take place Aug. 24 at UREC’s Backyard Bash.

The event will take place from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. behind the SRC. Free food and T-shirts will be available. A DJ will be provided by local radio station ZFun 106.

UREC advises those who want to participate in activities to wear athletic closed-toe shoes. The event is free and open to the public.

Valley Road Block Party

Free pizza, sports club demonstrations, an outdoor movie and fitness classes will be available Aug. 24 at the Valley Road Block Party.

The event will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight on the Valley Road playfields. A DJ will provide music, and UREC will inform students about available activities.

Norman said the event is “a great way to just try something with no commitment.”

The movie will begin at 9:30 p.m. No registration is required.

Sunset Paddle Trip

Students will kayak the Snake River each day from Aug. 18 to Aug. 20 for the ORC’s Sunset Paddle Trip.

“It’s definitely a way for people to experience the Palouse and meet new people,” program coordinator Callie Metzner said.

Participants can register on the UREC website. Registration for the one-day trip will close for each day of paddling from Aug. 15 to Aug. 17, respectively.

The cost, $25 for SRC members and $40 for non-members, includes a kayak rental, transportation and an adventure facilitator.

White Water Rafting

UREC will host a group white water rafting and camping tour on Idaho’s Salmon River Aug. 15 to Aug. 16.

The first day will begin with a three-hour scenic drive to Lucile, Idaho, where campers will stay the night. The group will return to Pullman at 8 p.m. on the second day.

Registration costs $90 for SRC members and $115 for non-members and will close on Aug. 7. The cost covers transportation, raft guides, camping gear, rafting equipment and a lunch.

A mandatory pre-trip meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 at the ORC.
