Stock rising; Deone Bucannon shines at WSU Pro Day

While Thursday was just a normal routine day for students on the WSU campus, for seven WSU football players, it was one of the biggest days of their lives.

NFL scouts from Pittsburgh to Seattle were in attendance for the Washington State Pro Day yesterday afternoon. While most eyes were on WSU senior safety Deone Bucannon, who’s projected to be selected early in the NFL Draft, the Pro Day was a chance for other players to prove to scouts why they deserve to hear their name called in May.

WSU senior cornerback Damante Horton is one of those players working hard to boost his draft stock. Horton started off the day with the highest vertical jump out of his teammates with 33 inches and ran the 40-yard dash in five seconds.

“I felt like I did pretty well,” Horton said. “I came out and competed.”

Horton admitted he could’ve run the 40-yard dash faster. The senior cornerback also lifted 225 pounds nine times in the bench press. In the ball drills, Horton did not drop a single pass that was thrown to him.

“He has good ball skills, good awareness of routes,” WSU defensive coordinator Mike Breske said. “What I say about Damante is he gets himself in the best position he can be.”

WSU redshirt senior offensive lineman Rico Forbes impressed the scouts yesterday by benching 31 reps of 225, which was the most reps out of his two other teammates that participated. In the middle of his first time benching, the scouts stopped Forbes because the weights fell off the bar. but he got another opportunity and did not waste it.

“He was on a roll and then the weights fell off,” WSU senior offensive lineman John Fullington said. “(If the weights didn’t fall off) I bet he would’ve knocked out 35 maybe 40 (reps), so he’s a beast.”

Fullington finished the day with 30 reps during the bench press and thought his best area of the day was the bench press.

“I think it (the day) went all right,” Fullington said.

Bucannon did not participate in any work out that involved running or lifting since he already participated in those events at the 2014 NFL Combine. However, Bucannon did get a chance to participate in ball drills.

“I’m thankful to get out there,” Bucannon said. “Each and every time I get out there I’m going to try as hard as I possibly can. I’m going to show them (the scouts) what I have and what I can do. I felt today went well, wish I could’ve caught a few more passes than I did, but other than that I’m happy with my performance.”

With Pro Day and the combine over now for Bucannon, he said he’s going to continue to try and make an impression on NFL teams and continue to work hard and continue to get better.

“If you look at him, nobody’s going to outwork him, even now his preparation be it mental, be it physical, second to none,” Breske said.

Other seniors who participated were linebacker Justin Sagote, nose tackle Ioane Gauta, offensive lineman Matt Goetz, and kickers Mike Bowlin and Andrew Furney.

“I’m glad I got to see all my teammates,” Bucannon said. “I hope they did as best as they can, and it looked like they all were doing great, a bunch of smiles out there, and I was happy to see them.”
