Cougars take on the Washington Huskies for Senior Day

After completing the season sweep of Arizona State, the WSU men’s basketball team will look to complete another sweep against cross-state rival Washington Huskies.

WSU (12-15, 5-10) seemed to have found a spark of energy after getting blown out by No. 4 Arizona last week. Head Coach Ernie Kent exploded on his team in a press conference after the game, which resulted in a big 86-71 win against the Sun Devils on Saturday.

“I can’t say enough about how they responded to the challenge I put in front of them,” Kent said. “I thought they responded in a big way.”

That momentum will lead the Cougars into Senior Day, the last time that center Conor Clifford, forward Josh Hawkinson, and guards Charles Callison and Ike Iroegbu will play in Beasley Coliseum.

“The younger guys on the team have had excellent leadership from those four seniors who are going out the door,” Kent said. “They have set a great example.”

The Cougars will have to answer to projected top-five NBA Draft pick and Pac-12 leading scorer freshman guard Markelle Fultz, who lit up the Cougars the last time the teams met in Seattle in a thrilling 79-74 win for WSU on New Year’s Day. In the game, Fultz put up 26 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, just short of a triple-double.

“I try to be the best player on the court,” Fultz said. “That is in all aspects of the game too, not just scoring.”

Besides limiting Fultz’s production, WSU did a good job containing the Huskies’ offense. The Cougars held UW to below 45-percent shooting from the field and forced 14 turnovers.

Hawkinson has a history of high-level play against Washington, averaging 21 points and about 15 rebounds in his last four games against the Huskies. Hawkinson will be looking to build on his 26-point and eight-rebound performance the last time he faced the in-state rival.

Freshman guard Malachi Flynn also played a big part in the Cougars’ victory against the Huskies. Flynn put up 16 points and six assists in the matchup. He also hit two clutch shots in the last two minutes of the game that helped seal the win for WSU.

WSU has also seen solid production from Iroegbu, who has scored 17 or more points in seven of his last nine contests and has also been dishing the ball out well, averaging five assists per game in that span.

“These games mean a lot,” Iroegbu said. “When the schedule comes out, Washington is one of the games you mark down.”

The Cougars will tip off Senior Day against the Huskies at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday in Beasley Coliseum. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
