Comedy Night brought locals a relaxed but high-energy atmosphere and constant laughter with headliner John Roy and feature performer Lara Beitz. Their jokes ranged from racy to nerdy and all things in-between.

Roy kicked off the very first Comedy Night back in 2011 and returned Saturday night as an even bigger and well-known artist.

Mike O’Brien, general manager of Best Western Plus University Inn, sets no rules or boundaries for the showcased comedians.

“Every comic is different in their style and their delivery,” O’Brien said. “We just let them do what they do.”

Comedy Night brought in 150 people for each show, allowing attendees to see what the Best Western has to offer, including the restaurant, bars and meeting spaces, O’Brien said.

O’Brien said he works with Alvin Williams, comedian and emcee of each Comedy Night, as a continuously successful dynamic duo.

“I couldn’t do it without Alvin. He truly is just an amazing person and great guy,” O’Brien said. “My hat’s off to Alvin for finding good quality comedians to make the shows always fun and exciting.”

Williams met headliner Roy back in 2011, and he met the feature of Comedy Night, Beitz, only five months ago.

“We performed at a restaurant we were both paired at,” Williams said. “I just loved her, she’s hilarious.”

Beitz’s sense of humor is deeply honest, raw and relatable, as she focused a lot on her personal life and her experience as a three-years-sober alcoholic.

Roy’s voice, style and natural approach as a comic is impossible to not laugh at. He joked about his “nerdy” upbringing and how Game of Thrones is a “normal” persons view of the “nerd’s” fantasyland they’ve always lived in.

“I’ll eat pretty much anything, even cheap food but sometimes, food is too cheap,” Roy said during his performance. “There’s a place that sells hot dogs for $1.49 … with fries. So I’m like, I’ll give you $3, and whatever you do to make it $1.49 … yeah, don’t do that to mine.”

Williams is not only the emcee and opening act of every show, he is also a nationally touring comedian, which is how he discovers the Comedy Night performers.

He tries something new and fresh each performance. Each new year feels like a new chapter, Williams said.

“I’m not worried about not coming back, there is no show without me booking the show,” he said. “Here is completely different than the rest of the road. I get to experiment here.”

Because Best Western is the place in the area that provides consistent entertainment every few months, the audience is appreciative of the show, and the performers feel they are appreciated as well. It goes both ways, so everyone enjoys themselves on Comedy Night, Williams said.

“We love the way that the people treat us,” Williams said. “The audience is always really supportive here.”

The 6 p.m. performance had the audience rolling with laughter.

“Whenever the first show goes well, you know the next show is going to go bananas,” Williams said.
