WSU baseball team takes on Loyola Marymount

The WSU baseball team starts a four game series with Loyola Marymount University today in Los Angeles.

The Cougars continue their road trip in California, looking to bounce back after a (1-2) start in their first series against Sacramento State.

Head Coach Marty Lees said redshirt junior pitcher Damon Jones will again start on Friday night, with juniors Ryan Walker and Cody Anderson starting Saturday and Sunday. The starter for Monday afternoon’s game has not been confirmed. Lees said he has a few options, including sophomore right-hander David Wallum, but will see how the weekend games play out first.

He will continue to use a variety of players and lineups this weekend, Lees said.

“[We are] trying to find as many ways as we can to get kids opportunities, so when we do want to use them they are ready to go,” he said.

WSU will take on an LMU team that is on a roll to open the season. LMU started off its season taking two of three against a UC Santa Barbara team that came into the 2017 season ranked No.18 in the country. Lees said LMU takes advantage of opponents’ mistakes, so the Cougars will have to do the little things right in order to be successful in this weekend’s series.

The Cougars have had a rocky start gearing up for the season as rain cancelled Monday’s game against Sacramento State. The rain has yet to let up, making it difficult for WSU to practice for the upcoming series.

“We’re still not able to get on a field because of the rain down here,” Lees said. “We need time to practice with our team so we can do a better job with holding runners, fielding bunts and things like that.”

Lees said there are many things the team can improve on this weekend, mentioning errors in particular. The Cougars made seven errors across three games, including four in the nightcap of Saturday’s double-header. Lees called the Cougars’ performance on defense uncharacteristic.

Offensively, Lees said the team needs to do a better job of hitting with runners on base and stringing hits together. He said there were many opportunities to score in all three games, but the Cougars were not efficient enough hitting with runners in scoring position. WSU left 19 men on base during the series, something Lees hopes will improve with time.

The first pitch of the series will take place at 6 p.m. today at Page Stadium. Saturday’s game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m., and Sunday and Monday’s games will start at 1 p.m. Live streams of the games will be available on wsucougars.com.
