Senior guard Ike Iroegbu charges toward the basket for a layup against the Utah Utes on Wednesday at Beasly Coliseum.

From staff reports

The WSU men’s basketball team lost at home against the University of Utah 88-47. This results in a four-game losing streak.

Cougars Head Coach Ernie Kent called the first timeout of the game after the Utes got off to an 11-2 run early in the first half. The Cougars never recovered after the slow start, allowing for a one-sided game in favor of Utah.

Before the teams headed off to the locker rooms for the end of the half, the Utes fought for one last bucket and pushed their score to 43 points while the Cougars had 24.

At the half, the Cougars shot 46.2 percent from the floor, went zero for six on three point attempts and missed one free throw. The Utes shot 62.1 percent from the floor, went one for five from three-point range and made six out of eight free throws.

Early in the second half, the Cougars forced a turnover that had both teams hustling for the ball. Both teams scrambled for the ball, until the Cougs maintained possession and passed the ball to freshman guard Malachi Flynn who sank a three-pointer.

At the end of the second half, WSU’s field goal percentage dropped more than half to 21.9 percent compared to the first-half stats, but improved their three-point percentage and free throw to 16.7 and 77.8 percent.

Utah’s field goal and free-throw percentage dropped 5.8 and 21.7 percent while their three-point increased to 58.3 percent.

The Cougs were simply outmatched. They could not find consistency on both sides of the ball as the Utes kept increasing their lead throughout the game.

The Cougars will host the University of Colorado at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Pac-12 Network will air this game.
