A painting class for the ‘happy little trees’

In the spirit of happy little trees and oil painting, anyone can explore their creative side by watching Bob Ross.

Today, the Associated Students of the University of Idaho (ASUI) Vandals After Dark presents a Bob Ross paint night. Partnering with Wild at Art, a local art studio that offers paint-your-pottery and various artistic activities, tonight’s event focuses on following along to Bob Ross’ show while participants try their hand at oil painting.

Best known for his educational PBS program called “The Joy of Painting,” Bob Ross created landscapes in less than an hour with his “wet-on-wet” technique. His show originally aired from 1983 to 1994, but all of the episodes are currently free to watch on YouTube.

His landscape portraits mainly focused on the Alaskan wilderness where he was stationed while in the Air Force, while he developed his technique from teacher William Alexander. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring, and then focused his efforts on painting full-time, according to The New York Times.

Ryan Donahue, the late-night program chair for Vandal Entertainment, said this is his first time working with Wild at Art, and they will mostly run the event and provide all the supplies needed. The paint night will last about an hour to an hour and a half. Going off of Facebook interest, Donahue said he expects approximately 60 to 100 people to show up.

Donahue typically plans two to three events per semester, and for this event, he spent a lot of time working with catering, advisers and room coordinators to set up the room. His main task involved getting the word out about the event, including setting up the event page on Facebook, he said.

When asked about his favorite part of planning events, Donahue said the opportunity to get involved benefitted him the most.

“I know everyone says get involved, but as soon as you start doing it, it’s really fun,” he said. “You meet a lot of people and learn to work better. It’s a growth opportunity.”

University of Idaho catering services will provide food and beverages. While the actual painting starts at 7 p.m., participants are encouraged to show up half an hour earlier for pizza and to watch an episode of “The Joy of Painting.” The paint night is free to attend for UI students, and general admision is $20.
