WSU Brass Quintet performs horn and percussion blend

From staff reports

The Faculty Artist Series features a mixture of brass and percussion pieces that strive to showcase the talents of the musicians.

The WSU Brass Quintet serves as the focus for the concert, WSU professor of music David Turnbull said. They will be playing a piece named “Brass Quintett” written by Jan Koetsier, a 20th-century composer. The concert also includes three brass pieces all named “Trio” and several percussion compositions.

“The concert has quite a variety,” Turnbull said. “Even if someone doesn’t like all of the pieces, there is bound to be something they’ll enjoy.”

Trunbull helped coordinate the concert and will perform using his new e-flat cornet, a type of trumpet. He began playing trumpet in the sixth grade when the local music shop brought instruments for students to try out, and he has played the horn ever since.

Planning came together in a matter of days, Turnbull said. A horn teacher wanted to perform the first piece, and the concert built around it. The date was just a matter of convenience, Turnbull said. Most faculty concerts take place at the end of the semester, leaving the beginning wide open.

The concert takes place 8 – 10 p.m. on Tuesday at the Bryan Hall Theatre. General admission is $10, and admission is free for WSU students with ID.
