WSU splits a pair of home games over the weekend

The WSU women’s basketball team had mixed results this weekend in its home games against the University of San Diego and Boise State University.

The Cougars grinded out an 83-73 win over San Diego on Friday, but fell to the Broncos 77-73 in overtime on Sunday.

Junior guard Pinelopi Pavlopoulou, sophomore forward Borislava Hristova and freshman guard Chanelle Molina ran the offense for the Cougars on Friday, putting up a combined 47 points against San Diego.

The Cougars went 11 for 14 from the foul line in the game. The 11 extra points proved to be the winning push that got WSU past the Toreros.

“We’ve been trying to work on our free throws and get our minds right when we get on the free throw line,” Pavlopoulou said. “In practice, we try to visualize making the free throw first, and today it looks like it worked for us.”

Redshirt sophomore forward Nike McClure pulled in six rebounds in 10 minutes of action and led the team in rebounds for the game.

“I thought that we outworked them,” WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. “I thought that we really turned it on with our defense and were able to get some steals and shut them down a little bit. I thought our rebounding improved, especially in the fourth quarter.”

The Cougars then took on an undefeated Boise State team two days later. The Broncos entered the game with a 5-0 overall record and maintained their undefeated status with the win over WSU.

The Cougars again fared well from the charity stripe, hitting 14 foul shots in the game to put the score at 69 all heading into overtime, but the Broncos took an early lead in overtime that was never relinquished.

Hristova and Molina each had 13 points, followed by junior guard Caila Hailey and freshman forward Kayla Washington who each had 10.

WSU now moves to 5-3 on the season and travels to Spokane on Thursday to face Gonzaga. Live updates of the game will be posted at wsucougars.com.
