Comedy Night is more than just another gig for performing comedians; it brings together old friends to create new memories and gives national touring comedians a taste of Idaho.

Comedy Night invites two new professional comedians to perform in this night time show held quarterly at the Best Western University Plus Inn in Moscow.

Headlining tomorrow night’s show is John “Hippieman” Novosad, seen on CBS Late Late Show, and Sam Demaris, seen on Maxim’s Real Men of Comedy Tour.

Mike O’Brien, general manager of Best Western University Plus Inn, launched Comedy Night in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, four years ago and started the show in Moscow when he moved here about a year ago.

O’Brien is looking forward to the entire line up for the last show of the year.

“We’re ending on an extremely high note with ‘Hippieman,’” O’Brien said. “He’s one of the biggest named comics we’ve had so far in our venue.”

Alvin Williams, MC of every Comedy Night, finds comedians he has performed with at some point during his own travels as a professional comedian of 10 years.

Williams has been business partners with O’Brien and hosting his shows since Comedy Night originated in Coeur d’Alene.

“Moscow needed a comedy presence,” Williams said. “I want people to see the best comedians from around the country that they may have never heard of.”

Oftentimes in a college town, such as Moscow, there aren’t many outlets for people who aren’t going to college to let their hair down and let loose, Williams said.

Comedy Night is for college students, too. It’s a fun atmosphere and for Williams, it’s a giant family atmosphere, he said.

“The comics that we bring in are not dirty,” Williams said, “but there’s no muzzle on what we can talk about and what we can say. It’s completely uncensored.”

“Hippieman” is his own original brand of comedy, and there’s no one like him, Williams said. Audiences have to see him live to appreciate what he does.

This type of live entertainment is different because after the show, the audience has a chance to hang out and grab a drink with the performers and get to know them on a more personal level, Williams said.

“It goes both ways because for the performers, they get to see Idaho in a different light, and it gives Moscow something new and a new appreciation for comedy,” Williams said.

Williams enjoys coming back to Moscow every three months, because he is able to visit his college town as an alumnus from the University of Idaho (UI).

“You’re getting a comedy club experience in a place that doesn’t have comedy clubs,” Williams said. “This is what you would get in New York or L.A.”

Comedy Night will be held in one of the conference rooms at the Best Western University Plus Inn. There are two showings for ages 18 and older at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday. The next Comedy Night is scheduled for Feb. 11.
