Artist to discuss utopic themes in art

From staff reports

Anne-Marie Oliver, an artist and scholar, will visit WSU to give a guest lecture titled, “Why we can’t stop talking about Utopia.”

Oliver’s lecture is one of eight guest lecturer events hosted by the Department of Fine Arts that focuses on the broad theme of utopia and dystopia, said Joe Hedges, assistant professor of painting/intermedia and organizer of the event.

“We’ve asked these artists and scholars to think about how this theme relates to their art,” Hedges said.

The recent election makes Oliver’s lecture about utopian society quite timely, Hedges said. He added that her work involves thinking about theories related to art and culture.

“She’ll talk about larger cultural issues and how artists are thinking about her idea,” Hedges said.

He said that the Department of Fine Arts will host three or four other events next semester.

Anne-Marie Oliver’s hour-long lecture begins at 5 p.m. on Monday in Fine Arts Room 5062.
