Calling all artists, the Student Entertainment Board will host a reception for the next gallery exhibit and sale of artwork by local talent today.

The opening exhibit features photographs from the University Recreation’s (UREC) last outdoor photo contest, including sections titled “Adventure,” “Best of Washington,” “Wildlife,” “Cultural,” and “Landscape.” The largest section, “Landscape,” contains 84 photos, making it a challenge to properly showcase, Victoria Deleon a CUB gallery programmer. Overall, the exhibit displays nearly 200 photos, forcing Deleon to get creative in planning the display. For example, the “Best of Washington” section subtly resembles a fish.

For the contest, the photos originally went to a third party for judging before coming to the CUB gallery. SEB then designs the display, arranges the catering and provides tables for artists to sell their work. Both students and non-students can sign up as artists to sell their work, and they keep all the profits they earn. Arranging the artwork requires a lot of pre-planning, Deleon said.

“When you get to see the finished product and all the hard work you put into arranging the photos, that’s the most exciting part for me,” Deleon said.

Walter Gawron is a senior majoring in social sciences and he works as a committee member to help set up, take down and clean the exhibits as needed. Also an artist, Gawron will be selling his work at the reception. For him, sizing the photos was a surprisingly difficult part of set-up, because the borders of the photographs are not the same size and needed trimming to make the display as neat as possible.

Sketch Wednesdays happen usually three to four times per semester, holding receptions for new exhibits. The next exhibit opens and local artists will exchange and sell their work at 12 p.m. today in the CUB Gallery. SEB will also give out free sketch books while supplies last, and refreshments will be provided.
