Party in Punjab represents Indian culture

The Sikh Student Association and ASWSU hope to make deeper connections with students of different cultures through Party in Punjab tonight.

The President of Sikh Student Association Jaiteg Mundi, explains that they want to reach out to the community in order for people to experience their Northern Indian culture. They plan to perform the traditional Bhangra dance and teach a few steps to attendees.

“We are showcasing our culture, like our traditional dances and the traditional singing,” Mundi said, “and after that we’re going to teach one or two steps to everyone, then we’re going to have an open dance floor.”

Mundi explains that they want to feature their culture in a party atmosphere because festivals frequently occur throughout the year in India.

“Being happy, dancing and singing; that’s a big part of our culture,” Mundi said.

The Vice President of the Sikh Student Association, Sajan Sandhu, hopes that this event will reach out to people that want to experience the culture in an informal, relaxing environment.

“I think it might give people the realization that maybe, reaching out (and) enjoying a new culture doesn’t have to be this huge, scary thing, it can be kind of fun too,” Sandhu said. “We really want to get people that don’t really know a lot about Punjabi culture.”

This event will also feature DJ Prince, a Seattle-based mixer who will play a fusion of Indian and American music.

“It will be a fusion of both cultures, so it will be fun for all the communities, like the American community, the Indian community (and) Middle Eastern Students Association, who are also helping us,” Mundi said.

Mundi and Sandhu hope that this new event will help to recruit more students to the club and better their knowledge about the traditions of Punjabi culture.

“We’re trying to raise more awareness and be more active on campus,” Sandhu said.

Mundi and Sandhu wanted this event to be affordable for students.

“We wanted it to be accessible for everyone, that’s why we try to get as much funding as we can to reduce the ticket prices,” Sandhu said.

Party in Punjab will take place at 7 p.m. tonight in the CUB Junior Ballroom. Admission is $2 for WSU students and $5 for non-students. There will be refreshments and a photo booth.
