Boasting over one hundred shows per year, the rap quartet Nappy Roots will come to Moscow to perform their celebrated Hip-Hop and their expanding fan base.

Sporting their own label, Nappy Roots released their latest independent album, “The 40 Akerz Project,” in May of last year, according to Nappy Roots’ official website.

Nappy Roots has created 11 full-length studio albums and remains one of the most active performers in the Hip-Hop industry. In 2014 Nappy Roots featured in 150 tour dates while their music had been licensed out to TV and film.

Their song “Good Day” has been used in “Gossip Girl,” the comedy film “Neighbors” and most recently “The Secret Life of Pets.” In addition, various commercials for Kellogg’s, McDonald’s and the trailer for “Bad Moms” have also featured the song.

Nappy Roots has achieved recognition in their native state of Kentucky, Sept. 16 has been “Nappy Roots Day” since 2002. The state holiday focuses on the importance of education for the youth.

“I think a lot of it [scheduling performances] is dependent on demand … a lot of it is driven by markets with major universities,” Chris Weeks, manager of Nappy Roots, said.

The target demographic of Nappy Roots is typically college students, Weeks said.

“We make a determination with our agent on where to perform. We typically do the Pacific Northwest in the fall…,” Weeks said. “It’s broken down by area for the convenience sake. We pride ourselves on the fact that we go to small towns.”

The Nappy Roots generally prefers to perform for smaller audiences.

“We really enjoy settings with 500 to 1,000 where we can get intimate with fans,” Weeks said.

The Nappy Roots’ favorite part about performing is seeing the reaction of their audiences, Weeks added.

“I think the guys really enjoy when the fans get into it,” he said.

The band, who formed at Western Kentucky University, brings Southern charm and experiences through music, hoping to provide something everyone can relate to, according to their website.

Nappy Roots will perform at 9:30 p.m. tonight at John’s Alley Tavern in Moscow. Admission is $15.
