Reader reactions: ‘A crash course in ride-sharing’

Readers react to an article about Haley Markham, a WSU student who suffered severe back and neck injuries from a car accident in November 2011. Markham accepted a ride from a fellow student who hosted two open seats in her sedan for a small fee on the “Pullman2Seattle” Facebook page. The driver, who was a stranger to Markham, nearly collided with an oncoming car before swerving off the road and slamming into a fence. The driver was trying to pass five cars at once.

Anna Maul: “This FB group ‘rideshare’ is not an actual TNC (Transportation Network Company). Not like Uber or Lyft, more like trying to find a reliable ride from Craigslist. I hope people don’t confuse this type of arrangement with actual background checked drivers.”

Minna Leigh: “Super important to be safe. Cutting a few hours off the trip isn’t worth it.”

Christine Mier: “This is why when I offer a ride to anyone on the site, I always tell them I have a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) and I drive the speed limit. If you’re looking to get there faster than that, I’m not the driver for you.”

Jack Guske: “From the middle of August on, I will NOT ride my motorcycle on (Highway) 26 from Washtucna to Pullman, because, frankly, I don’t want to die!”

Desirae Rose Woodford: “It’s so true. I ended up bringing my car because ride sharing with strangers freaked me out.”

Ashley Brodin: “For anyone interested, try using the Zimride site. Drivers can be rated so you might have some idea of what you’re getting into.”
