Reader reactions: ‘Why you should tip and say ‘thank you’: Evergreen columnist says servers are people, too’

Readers react to a column by Evergreen columnist Tyler Delong, in which he emphasizes the importance of treating wait staff with courtesy. Delong encourages customers to tip their waiter even if they didn’t enjoy the meal, as their tips are tied to minimum wage. Delong also states that those who can’t afford a tip or prefer not to tip shouldn’t go out to eat.

Collin Shull: “I think it is ridiculous that employees receiving tips are allowed to work for less than the normal minimum wage, thus making tipping more socially obligatory as opposed to a reward encouraging good service. But then again I would probably feel very differently if I had ever owned a restaurant.”

Tod Merley:  “And please remember that those serving where the bill is small could likely use that tip the most.”

Victor Small:  “… If you provide good service I’ll give you a good tip, but if the service is poor you’re going to get little to no tip. I don’t care how little you get paid, it is still not my duty to pay you independent of service quality. …”

Brooke E Lester:  “Mr. Pink doesn’t tip … and no tip is a very loud and clear message … I believe in tipping accordingly.”
