Reader reactions: ‘Bear deaths raise questions of WSU research ethics’

Readers react to a call by the animal research watchdog group Stop Animal Exploitation Now (SAEN) to penalize WSU after 15 grizzly bears died under university care. Read the full article here.

Lisa Steele Haberly: “This is horrifying, I always enjoy stopping by to see them and believed WSU was doing valuable research to help the bears. It appears I was woefully naive.”

Elizabeth Siler: “I’m glad somebody is pursuing these untimely deaths. It does seem like a large number of animals died in a short period of time, and we already know from previous articles about the bears that there was some gross negligence in some of these deaths. I continue to think that we should turn the facility into a sanctuary for the remaining bears (who obviously can’t be released at this point in their lives) and when the last one dies (hopefully a natural death!) we should close the research station.”

Bruce Kenoyer II: “Sad for the bears, but this reporting is as fair and balanced as Fox News. SAEN is obviously pushing things because they have an axe to grind. There does need to be an investigation to figure out what’s been going on, but the Daily Evergreen should not be shilling for anti-science political groups.”

Kathleen Coleman: “Oh man, that’s grim. Needs a full independent investigation for sure. I hope whatever the wrongs are can be made right …”
