Men’s golf has best finish of the spring season

The WSU men’s golf team capped off its best finish of the spring season thus far at the Seattle University Redhawk Invitational at the Chambers Bay Golf Course at University Place, Washington.

The Cougars played their best round of the tournament on Tuesday finished with (+18, 298). Even with the impressive score, the Cougars slid back in the standings two spots, finishing in fourth with an overall score of (+74, 922).

In-state rival Washington won the tournament by a landslide. The Huskies did not let up in the final round Tuesday, and beat Texas Christian University by eleven strokes. TCU came in second after carding an overall score of (+60, 908). Oregon State rounded out the top three after scoring (+68, 916).

Tournament host, Seattle U, finished just behind the Cougars in fifth place, after carding an overall score of (+78, 926).

The Cougars consistent play this tournament showed in the individual scores. Three Cougars finished in the top 25, including freshman Aaron Whalen, who jumped eleven spots Tuesday to finish tied for eleventh after shooting an impressive (+2 72) in the third round. Whalen ended the tournament with a (+16, 228).

After being tied for third after the first two rounds, freshman AJ Armstrong slid in the standings on Tuesday finishing tied for 13th. With this finish, Armstrong was able to mark his fourth top 25 finish of the season.

Senior Evan Omelia slid back in the standing on Tuesday, finishing tied for 24th after being in 10th place through the first two rounds. Omelia finished his three rounds with a score of (+20, 232).

Sophomore Derek Bayley finished the tournament tied for 35th after carding a (+23, 235) in the tournament. Senior Bhurinat Songpaiboon finished tied for 70th at (+32, 244).

Sophomore Zach Anderson, who competed as an individual, finished tied for 46th after shooting (+26, 238).

The Cougars will head to Provo, Utah in its next tournament to compete at the PING Cougar Classic at Brigham Young University, April 11-12.
