WSU finishes third at PING Cougar Classic in Utah

 The WSU men’s golf team finished the PING Cougar Classic in third, Tuesday, at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah.

Tournament champion Brigham Young University played fantastic golf in the tournament, leaving the competition behind in the dust.

BYU finished 26 strokes ahead of University of Wyoming, who finished second, after an overall score of (-35, 829). Wyoming finished the tournament with a score of (-9, 855).

The Cougars moved down a spot in the final round of the tournament after finishing second through the first two rounds. Overall, the Cougars played stellar golf, capping off their best finish of the spring and completed the tournament with a score of (-6, 858).

Leading the way for the Cougars was sophomore Zach Anderson. Anderson played a great round Tuesday, carding (-1, 71), which moved him from tied for 18th Tuesday to tie for a 14th finish.

“Zach had a really good tournament, probably the best he’s ever had, which was awesome,” said head coach Garrett Clegg in an interview with wsucougars.com.

Anderson finished the tournament with an overall score of (-2, 214). For Anderson, this ties his career-best three-round versus par score, according to wsucougars.com

Finishing close behind Anderson was senior Evan Omelia and sophomore Derek Bayley, who finished one stroke back of Anderson. Omelia and Bayley finished tied for 16th after shooting (-1, 215) in the tournament.

Freshman Aaron Whalen had nice finish after shooting an even par in the tournament (216), placing Whalen tied for 19th.

Out of all the Cougars, junior Nick Mandell, who competed as an individual, had by far the best final round. Mandell finished the round with (-5, 67), which jumped him up 23 spots on the leaderboard, and finishing the tournament tied for 28th.

The Cougars will be back in Utah, finishing their season in a few weeks when they compete in the PAC-12 Championships April 29 through May 1 at the Salt Lake City Country Club in Salt Lake City, Utah.
