Inclement weather proves difficult for men’s golf to overcome in first round

From staff reports

The WSU men’s golf team is off to a rocky start in the Bandon Dunes Championships at the Bandon Trails Golf Course after the first round Sunday.

“Overall it was a tough day,” WSU Head Coach Garrett Clegg said via wsucougars.com. “Conditions were difficult, but they were difficult for everybody. It’s never fun to dig yourself out of a hole, but I’m confident we’ll bounce back through the next two rounds.”

Missouri and No. 11 Clemson are currently tied for first after posting a (+6, 290) on the day. They are followed by Seattle University (+12, 296).

In-state rival Washington is currently in fourth after finishing at (+13, 297).

WSU (+22, 306), is sitting in 10th place on a day in which no team broke par. The Cougars are 16 stokes back from the leader and look to improve while dealing with the tough playing conditions.

The weather forecast is predicting rain showers Monday and a decrease in wind after the windy conditions in the first round. The forecast is calling for 50 percent rain showers and three mile per hour winds, according to weather.com.

Freshman Aj Armstrong led all Cougars in the first round, carding a (+4, 75), tying him for 18th. Armstrong played close to par-golf all the way through, however, three bogies on the front nine and a double bogie on the 17th hole really set Armstrong back.

Freshman Aaron Whalen and sophomore Derek Bayley only trail Armstrong by one stroke and are tied with 10 other golfers for 23rd (+5, 76). Junior Nick Mandell and senior Evan Omelia are tied for 50th and shot (+8, 79).

The tournament will start its second of three rounds at 8:30 a.m on Monday. Live scoring updates will be available on golfstat.com.
