Middle of the pack: Men’s golf competes in the Airstream Adventures Northwest Classic

From staff reports

The WSU men’s golf team is currently sitting in the middle of the field after the first round of the Airstream Adventures Northwest Classic at the Willamette Valley Country Club in Canby, Oregon.

The Cougars are currently in eighth after scoring (+11, 290) on the day.

In this tournament, the first round consists of 36 holes, opposed to the 18 hole rounds the Cougars have been playing in lately.

Even with the weather conditions being sub-par with rain and breezy conditions, the weather hasn’t held back the top three schools thus far.

The leaders of the tournament are all within a few strokes of each other.

UNLV bounced around the top three spots during the day and eventually ended the first round in first place after shooting (-5, 280). Oregon trails by two stokes at (-3, 279), followed by in-state school Seattle University at (-4, 284) to round out the top three.

With the Cougars 16 strokes back from the leader, filling the gap now looks to be a tough task going into the final 18 holes Tuesday.

Sophomore Derek Bayley, who has played well all-year, continued his hot streak in the first round after shooting (+2, 58) to lead all Cougars. Bayley is currently tied for 14th. Freshman AJ Armstrong is on the same pace as Bayley, as he is also tied for 14th after shooting an even par on the day (59).

Senior Evan Omelia ended the day tied for 38th after shooting (+3, 55), followed by junior Nick Mandell who is currently tied for 71st after shooting (+6, 70).

In this tournament, the top four scorers for each team count towards the overall team score. Sophomore Brian Mogg, who shot (+8, 76) in the first round did not have his score count towards the team score and is not on the leader board.

Senior Bhurinat Songpailboon, who is playing as an individual in this tournament, shot (+3, 56) in the first round and is tied for 50th.

The tournament will start its final round Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. The final round will consist of 18 holes, opposed to the 36 holes played Monday. Live scoring updates can be found at golfstat.com.
