Four men’s basketball team members on Pac-12 All-Academic team

From staff reports

Although the WSU men’s basketball team didn’t blow teams away on the court this season, several Cougars went above and beyond in the classroom.

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott announced the Pac-12 men’s basketball All-Academic teams Thursday, and four Cougs were on the list, the most since 2009.

Senior forward Junior Longrus earned his third-consecutive nod, while junior forward Josh Hawkinson made the team for the second-straight season. Both WSU forwards made First Team All-Academic for the first time in their collegiate careers. Longrus earned a 3.39 GPA this season as a management operations and marketing major, while Hawkinson earned a 3.30 in business. Hawkinson and Longrus are the first Cougars to make the All-Academic First Team since 2011, and it’s the first time multiple Cougs have been on the team since 2009.

Hawkinson was also an honorable mention on the 2015-16 All-Pac-12 team, the only Cougar to make any of the teams. Appearing in just 29 games, Hawkinson led the conference with 20 double-doubles, which tied his own school record.

Redshirt junior center Valentine Izundu and sophomore guard Ny Redding both made the Second Team, the first time either has made an All-Academic team in their careers. Izundu earned a 3.13 in social sciences, and Redding, who has yet to declare a major, earned a 3.19.

WSU was the only school to earn multiple First and Second Team All-Academic honors this season.

In order to be eligible to earn conference All-Academic honors, a player must earn at least a 3.0 GPA and be a starter or major contributor for their team.
