From staff reports

After spending the last five months putting in countless hours of work on and off the hardwood, the 2016 regular season is on the verge of conclusion for the WSU men’s basketball team.

The Cougars (9-20, 1-16 in Pac-12) will play their final game of the 2016 regular season on the road at Washington Wednesday night in Seattle.

Though WSU is currently on a 15-game losing streak, the Cougars have a decent chance of snapping the streak as the Huskies (16-13, 8-9 in Pac-12) sit at No.9 in the Pac-12 standings.

WSU almost knocked off UW in the first meeting between the two schools back in early January. The Huskies rallied late in the game and defeated the Cougars in overtime by a score of 99-95.

Here are three key areas of the game that the Cougars must execute if they want to snap their current 15-game losing streak:

Contain the Huskies backcourt

The biggest strength of this UW basketball team is its backcourt which is led by senior guard Andrew Andrews and freshman guard Dejounte Murray. In the first game between the two schools, Andrews and Murray combined for 54 points which was about half of UW’s total score.

Andrews is leading the Huskies in scoring by averaging 20.3 points a game while Murray is averaging 15.3 points a game in 2016. If the Cougars can hold either player to under 15 points then the Cougars have a chance.

Win the turnover battle

A big reason as to why WSU has not won a game since early January is the large amount of turnovers the team has given up per game.In the loss to UW, the Cougars coughed up 12 turnovers while the Huskies gave up eight. The Huskies also scored 12 points off those WSU turnovers.

Give Ike the rock

After starting conference play as one of the most consistent players on the WSU men’s basketball team, WSU junior guard Ike Iroegbu has tailed off a bit.

Iroegbu has not scored in double figures in the Cougars’ last six games. One of the reasons why Iroegbu isn’t scoring enough is the lack of shots he is taking in games. The former Oak Hill Academy guard needs to show more aggression in his shot selection in this upcoming game against the Huskies. In the loss to UW, Iroegbu hit 11 of 18 shots from the field which accumulated for a season-high of 28 points.

Tipoff between the Cougars and Huskies is set for 8 p.m. on Wednesday in Seattle. This game can be seen on ESPNU.
